Volunteer with Us

Teachers

Our volunteer instructors are part of the core mission of Dollar Scholars. By bringing your knowledge directly to classrooms and community centers, you empower adults and young people with the financial literacy they need to make confident, informed decisions. We are currently looking for volunteer instructors in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area. Though we hope to extend our programs to other areas, there are no immediate plans to do so.

Instructor Requirements:

  1. Background: A strong foundational understanding of personal finance, economics, or education. (Undergraduate economics/finance students or professionals are highly encouraged).
  2. Commitment: Availability to teach at least one 4-to-6 week cohort (approx. 2-3 hours per week).
  3. Training: Completion of our mandatory Dollar Scholars curriculum and pedagogy training.
  4. Communication: Strong public speaking skills and the ability to explain complex financial concepts in accessible, everyday language.
  5. Clearance: Must pass a standard volunteer background check.

We provide all the curriculum materials, presentation slides, and logistical support. You provide the energy, expertise, and passion to help your community thrive.

Other volunteers

You don't need to stand at the front of a classroom to make a massive impact. Dollar Scholars is actively seeking dedicated volunteers to help us develop our website and digital tools, to expand our reach, facilitate our operations, and connect with the community.

Example Roles for Volunteer Workers

  • Community Outreach: Build relationships with local community centers, libraries, and nonprofits in the DMV to host future Dollar Scholars classes.
  • Event Coordination: Assist with logistics, setup, and registration at our networking events and financial workshops.
  • Marketing & Social Media: Help us spread the word by creating digital content, photographing events, and managing local campaigns.
  • Bilingual Support: We have a high demand for fluent Spanish speakers to assist with translating materials and facilitating communication with participants.
  • Programmer: Help amplify the Dollar Scholars mission and message by contributing to developing our website.
  • Economic or data analysis: Support the Dollar Scholars agenda by analyzing internal or external data to advance our understanding of financial literacy and the benefits of financial education.

General Requirements

  • Location: Must be based in or easily able to commute within the DMV area for in-person community events.
  • Passion: A genuine interest in economic empowerment and financial education.
  • Reliability: Timely communication and commitment to your agreed-upon volunteer hours.
  • Programmer skills (optional): we emphasize a background in programming python, javascript or SQL, as well as relational databases, Django, and git
